HIV/AIDS and vulnerabilities claimed lives of many Ugandans particularly men leaving many widows with the burden of orphans and other vulnerable children. This has led a significant number of children in eastern and northern Uganda live under very difficult circumstances as poverty, environmental degradation, AIDS, and other diseases, family disintegration, wars, abuse, neglect, hazardous work, mental and physical disabilities, drug abuse and violence in society. Such children are unable to provide the necessary care and love to their young ones.
Food production is normally inadequate, medical care, education and other basic needs are hard to come -by, in such a family headed by children and widows. Thus is need to make necessary interventions to counter the problems faced by the widow led and child headed households which mostly are reflected in failure of the concerned households to access basic necessities of life food, shelter and housing besides inability to meet requirements for education such as scholastic materials.
KADO therefore, does the following to mitigate the effects of HIV/AIDS and other vulnerabilities among the vulnerable communities:
- Build capacity of OVC, widows and people with disability households and women in saving and small business entrepreneurship.
- Establish community and group saving schemes for OVC, widows and people with disability households
- Provide start kits to support small business activities for OVC and their caregivers to generate income
- Training in less labor intensive technologies for OVC households
- Train vulnerable households in climate change adaptation, coping and resilient
- Provide high quality agricultural inputs/tools, seeds/plantings and stocking materials
- Link OVC HH to relevant agricultural program such as NAADS/Wealth Creation, and advocate for their targeting to enable them access agricultural advice
- Sensitize child care takers on feeding practices for OVC with HIV/AIDS
- Provide and disseminate balanced diet IEC Materials to the community
- Facilitate Education/Trainings on Kitchen gardening for OVC H/holds to ensure access to locally available nutritious foods.
- Quarterly monitoring and evaluation visits to assess impact of social –economic activities
